Student Case Study

NC Music

Matthew Wild

I’ve always loved music, but was unsure if it would be the correct career choice. I had originally applied for a care course at another college but knew that my heart wasn’t in it. I decided to follow my heart and applied for the NC Music course at Ayr College. After looking into the course I knew then that a career in music is what I want. Long-term I want to be involved in the music industry.

I chose Ayr College because I had heard of all the great things going on here, I wanted to get back into education after spending 3 years working in a Barrister’s Office; a job which I enjoyed but it wasn’t really me!

As I am not from Ayr, coming to college was a scary prospect to begin with; I didn’t know anyone, but I am quite a sociable person so I wasn’t long in settling in and making friends.

I am really enjoying studying at Ayr College. You get a lot of freedom for self study and using the mixing desks, which has really made the difference, as the more effort you put in, the more experience you gain. The Lecturers are really down to earth, and are more like friends.

I am learning so much, beyond just music. As part of the NC course, time is spent each week with your Learning Development Advisor. Their job is to improve your Essential Skills, such as English, confidence, communication and social skills. My social skills and interaction with others have really developed in my time at Ayr College.

The Essential Skills training has definitely been a worthwhile addition to the course. Studying Music at Ayr College will help me immensely in pursuing my dream career. I completed the NC last year and I am now studying the HNC course. I plan to complete my education to degree level and Ayr College has given me the necessary skills to achieve this.
