This course is open to students who are employed as a Joiner and who have successfully completed or are undertaking an SVQ Level 3 in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent.
Applicants will need the agreement of their employer to release them to attend this course.
Who is this course for?
This additional course within the third year of the Modern Apprenticeship was developed to enhance the knowledge and skills level of the apprentice in the industry environment.
This course is designed to allow applicants with a keen interest in enhancing and progressing their skills in carpentry and joinery and who may wish to progress to a higher or supervisory level within the industry.
What subjects will I be studying?
You will study the following subjects:
•Complex Pitched Roofs
•High Class Finishings
•Windows and Screens
•Complex Timber Stair Construction
•Site Measuring and Setting Out Procedures
•New and Sustainable Building Technologies
•Construction Technical Communication Skills
How many days will I be in college?
You will attend college on a block release basis.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous for all practical elements of this course with theoretical assessment being undertaken in conjunction with the relevant practical exercises for each unit. Almost all written assessment is by open book assignment with some drawing exercises. In addition to the written assessment each candidate undertakes an on-line assessment centrally assessed by SQA.
