Course Details

How do I get in?

You will need a minimum of one relevant Higher at Grade C or above, or a pass in a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent. Applicants with appropriate experience or other training may be accepted without formal qualifications.

A place on this course is subject to an interview process.

This should not deter mature students from applying who may not have qualifications as they will be interviewed and considered on an individual basis.

Who is this course for?

The NHS is one of the largest employers in the country. Not only do they need doctors, nurses, paramedics etc, they need good administrators to help plan and organise the service to patients.

On completing the course not only you will be prepared to cope with the role of an administrator in today’s NHS environment, but also in the area of general business where both good administration and IT skills are essential.

What subjects will I be studying?

You will learn about the main areas of Administration and Information Technology including the Core Units:

IT Databases
IT Spreadsheets
IT Word Processing and Presentation Applications
Office Administration
Office Technologies
Communication
Recording Financial Transactions
Personal Development Planning
Graded Unit

There are optional units which need to be completed to obtain the HNC eg Medical Terminology, GP Administration and Hospital Administration. There may be the possibility of a work placement during the course.

How will I be assessed?

You will experience a wide variety of assessment methods throughout the year. Some will be project based, writing reports, delivering presentations or practical activities.

There will be one exam (Graded Unit) at the end of the year.

How many days will I be in college?

Normally 3/4 days, however you will be given your timetable when you attend your Induction Day.

What can I do next?

(SCQF Level 8) or progression to employment or university, which may include articulation arrangements with a variety of degree courses.

This will depend on your results and positive feedback from your lecturers as to your suitability.
