Course Details

How do I get in?

You will need four relevant Standard Grades at Credit Level, or a pass in a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 5 or equivalent.

A place on the course is subject to an interview process.

Your application will have been supported by a credible referee.

Successful applicants will apply to join the PVG Scheme or have their Scheme Records updated.

Who is this course for?

This course will prepare you for seeking employment in the care industry and is an excellent foundation for work based SVQ qualifications at Level 3.

It provides students with an integrated course of values, skills and knowledge to work effectively in a range of care settings.

What subjects will I be studying?

As the course progresses you will study subjects such as:

Mental Health and Mental Illness
Practical Skills for Carers
Psychology and Sociology

There will be opportunities for successful students to achieve the 2 SQA Highers in:

Care, and
Mental Health Care

Students’ personal development and employability are enhanced through the preparation for, and participation in, a care work-based placement.

How many days will I be in college?

Normally 3 days, but you will be given your timetable when you attend your Induction Day.

How will I be assessed?

In addition to the two external Highers you will undertake class based unit assessments throughout the course.

What can I do next?

Progression on to a wide range of relevant vocational courses at SCQF Level 7 or employment.

How do I fund my course?

You should apply for a Bursary. You can get a Bursary/EMA Application Pack from the Student Finance Office located in the Student Information Centre at Ayr Campus once you have been offered a place on the course.
